Mumbai, April 13, 2026: The last rites of legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle were held with full state honours at Shivaji Park on Monday, drawing an outpouring of grief from political leaders, members of the film fraternity, and countless admirers from across the country.

The solemn ceremony witnessed a large gathering of dignitaries and fans who assembled to bid a final farewell to one of Indian cinema’s most iconic voices. The state funeral underscored her unparalleled contribution to music and her enduring cultural legacy.

Earlier in the day, her mortal remains were placed at her residence in Lower Parel, allowing the public to pay their last respects. Since morning, a steady stream of mourners visited to honour the artist whose voice resonated across generations.

Among those who offered floral tributes were Devendra Fadnavis, State Cultural Affairs Minister Ashish Shelar, and legislators Sunil Shinde and Prasad Lad. Their presence reflected the profound national recognition of Asha Bhosle’s extraordinary contributions to Indian music.

Members of the film industry—ranging from veterans of the 1990s to contemporary artists—also attended the ceremony. They paid homage to a singer celebrated for her remarkable versatility, with a repertoire spanning classical, folk, ghazals, cabaret, and modern Bollywood hits.

The legendary vocalist passed away on Sunday at the age of 92 at Breach Candy Hospital. According to official statements, she had been admitted on Saturday evening after suffering from severe exhaustion and a chest infection. Despite intensive medical care, her condition deteriorated due to age-related complications, leading to multi-organ failure.

Fondly known as “Ashatai,” she was honoured with prestigious accolades, including the Padma Vibhushan and the Maharashtra Bhushan. Her illustrious career, spanning more than seven decades, left an indelible mark on the global music landscape.

As the final rites concluded with full state honours, tributes continued to pour in, with the nation mourning the loss of a timeless voice whose legacy will resonate for generations to come.
