Islamabad, November 6, 2024 – The Coordinator to Prime Minister on Climate Change Romina Khurshid Alam has said that Pakistan’s participation in COP29 would prioritize national interests, aiming to amplify the country’s voice within global climate discussions. She said this while talking to Ambassador of Azerbaijan to Pakistan, Khazar Farhadov, who met her at her office on Wednesday to advance collaborative efforts in preparation for the COP29 summit. The discussion between both focused on joint strategies to strengthen climate resilience and support mutual objectives in climate action.

During the meeting, Alam highlighted Pakistan’s ongoing initiatives for COP29, emphasizing the country’s commitment to building international consensus on critical climate issues.

“Pakistan’s preparations for COP29 are part of a broader strategy to engage with international partners and bolster our stance on vital climate issues,” Alam stated, underscoring Pakistan’s dedication to meeting its emission reduction targets as part of its nationally determined contributions (NDCs). She also emphasized the need for increased international support to help Pakistan achieve its sustainable development goals related to climate adaptation and mitigation.

She further highlighted the crucial role of developed countries in meeting their financial commitments to support developing nations in their climate resilience efforts. She noted Pakistan’s progress in transitioning to renewable energy, particularly in solar and wind sectors, and plans to showcase these advancements at COP29 as part of its climate strategy.

Ambassador Farhadov expressed Azerbaijan’s commitment to strengthening climate cooperation with Pakistan. He emphasized that closer bilateral ties could enhance both countries’ efforts in sustainable development, climate resilience, and regional cooperation. According to Farhadov, the upcoming COP29 summit offers a timely opportunity to deepen this partnership and address shared climate challenges.

The meeting concluded with both sides reaffirming their commitment to tackle climate change collaboratively, underscoring the importance of unified action to strengthen global climate resilience.
