Islamabad, April 26, 2026: President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif have strongly condemned the shooting incident at the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner in Washington, expressing relief that U.S. President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump remained safe.
In a statement, President Zardari described the attack as a “heinous act of violence” and stressed that such incidents deserve the strongest condemnation. He expressed satisfaction that President Trump and other attendees were unharmed.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also reacted strongly, saying he was deeply shocked by the disturbing events. In a message shared on social media, he said he was relieved to learn that President Trump, the first lady, and other guests were safe, adding that his thoughts and prayers are with the U.S. leadership.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar termed the attack a cowardly act, stating that violence has no place in civilised societies and stands against diplomacy and peace. He conveyed his best wishes to the U.S. president and the American people.
Acting President Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani also condemned the incident and expressed relief that no senior officials were harmed, extending his good wishes for the safety of U.S. leadership.
The incident occurred at the Washington Hilton, where a gunman opened fire at a security checkpoint during the dinner. Secret Service agents swiftly evacuated President Trump and the first lady, while a security officer injured in the attack was later discharged from hospital.
The suspect was arrested at the scene. President Trump praised the Secret Service for their rapid response, saying their actions ensured the safety of all attendees.
The shooting has triggered strong international reactions, with leaders across the world condemning the attack and expressing solidarity with the United States.
