Washington, D.C., April 27,2026: An eyewitness has recounted chilling details of a shooting scare during the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner, shedding light on how the suspected attacker allegedly carried out the act inside the hotel venue.

According to a report by The New York Times, a volunteer at the event, Helen Mebis, described the sequence of events leading up to the incident.

Mebis said that prior to the shooting, the alleged suspect, Cole Thomas Allen, assembled a long firearm in a poorly monitored room within the Washington Hill Hotel. The room, located near the entrance, was temporarily set up for storing bar carts and was reportedly unattended at the time.

Taking advantage of the lack of security, the suspect allegedly removed weapon parts from a bag, assembled the firearm, and began firing shots before proceeding up the stairs toward the ballroom. He was later apprehended by the United States Secret Service.

The eyewitness noted that the weapon appeared longer and more unusual than a standard firearm. “He fired multiple rounds in different directions—it seemed like he was shooting everywhere. I heard at least 10 shots,” Mebis said.

The gunfire triggered panic among attendees, with people scrambling to safety. However, swift action by security personnel ensured that no casualties were reported.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the suspect had traveled to Washington from the U.S. West Coast and was staying at the same hotel where the event was being held, indicating the possibility of premeditation aimed at getting close to high-profile political figures.
