First-ever snowfall makes Saudi Arabian desert a winter wonderland

Riyadh, November 8, 2024 – The Al-Nafūd desert in Al-Jawf, Saudi Arabia witnessed its first recorded snowfall last Sunday, covering the typically arid landscape in a layer of snow and turning it into a stunning winter wonderland.

This rare event followed intense rain and hailstorms across the kingdom, as reported by local media on Friday. The unusual weather reduced visibility and disrupted travel in the desert region, creating scenes that captivated people around the world. Social media quickly filled with videos and photos of the snow-covered desert, with one user, Nurlan Mededov, posting on X: “This is the first time in history that the desert has been covered in snow, as temperatures there rarely drop to such levels.”

The unprecedented snowfall has sparked discussions on climate change, with many users commenting on nature’s shifting patterns. “Not a good sign, mother nature is changing its colours,” remarked one user.

The UAE’s National Center of Meteorology attributed the snowfall to a low-pressure system originating from the Arabian Sea, extending over Oman, and bringing moisture-laden air to the typically dry region. This led to a weather pattern that triggered thunderstorms, hail, and rainfall across Saudi Arabia and the UAE, marking a remarkable deviation from the region’s usual dry conditions and highlighting the global climate’s growing unpredictability.
