Islamabad, May 2, 2026: Speaker National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq on Saturday said that free, secure and responsible journalism is a key pillar of every democratic society, stressing that an independent press is vital for strengthening democracy and ensuring transparency and accountability.

In his message on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, the National Assembly speaker said journalists play a crucial role in disseminating truth and providing timely and accurate information to the public.

Ayaz Sadiq said freedom of the press was indispensable for promoting democratic values, raising public awareness and upholding the rule of law. Paying tribute to journalists who lost their lives in the line of duty, he said the media community had rendered invaluable sacrifices in pursuit of truth and in becoming the voice of the people.

“Their contributions and sacrifices will always be remembered with respect,” he added.

The speaker said the Constitution of Pakistan guarantees freedom of expression and noted that in the digital age, the importance of responsible journalism has increased significantly in countering misinformation and propaganda.

He emphasized the need to promote fact-based reporting to safeguard national interests, strengthen social harmony and reinforce state stability.

Ayaz Sadiq further said Parliament remained committed to introducing effective legislation for media freedom, protection of journalists and safeguarding their rights. He stressed that media professionals must be provided with a safe and conducive environment so they can perform their duties without fear.

Highlighting the growing challenge of misinformation and unverified news, he said the issue could only be addressed through responsible, research-based and factual journalism.

Meanwhile, Deputy Speaker National Assembly Syed Ghulam Mustafa Shah said a free and responsible media was essential for the stability of a democratic system.

In his message, he said protecting journalists’ rights, ensuring professional freedom and guaranteeing their safety was a shared responsibility of both the state and society. He reaffirmed Parliament’s commitment to promoting media freedom and protecting journalists across the country.
