Islamabad, May 2, 2026: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday directed the relevant authorities to formulate a comprehensive strategy for stabilising electricity tariffs and providing relief to consumers amid ongoing energy sector reforms.

Chairing a high-level meeting on the power sector, the prime minister emphasized the need to reduce the burden on both industrial and domestic electricity consumers and instructed officials to take practical measures in this regard.

He also called for major improvements in the country’s power transmission system to curb line losses and improve efficiency.

Highlighting the importance of modernisation, PM Shehbaz stressed the adoption of advanced technologies in the energy sector and ordered the promotion of renewable energy projects to help overcome the country’s energy shortfall.

The premier further directed authorities to enhance digital facilities to make electricity bill payments easier and more convenient for consumers.

Reiterating the government’s resolve to tackle electricity theft, he ordered the continuation of strict action against power pilferage and said uninterrupted energy supply was essential for industrial growth and economic stability.

“Providing relief to domestic consumers remains one of the government’s top priorities,” the prime minister said, adding that all reforms in the energy sector would be implemented while keeping the broader interests of the public and industry in view.

During the meeting, officials presented various recommendations related to electricity consumption patterns for domestic users and the industrial sector.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, Economic Affairs Minister Ahad Khan Cheema, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, Power Minister Sardar Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari, Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik and other senior officials.

Last month, the government indicated it was preparing a revised power tariff structure aimed at encouraging industries to maximise operations during daytime hours and reduce electricity usage during evening peak hours.

Power Minister Awais Leghari had discussed the proposal with World Bank Country Director Bolormaa Amgaabaza, informing her that the Power Division was working on time-of-use tariff proposals to improve energy competitiveness after reviewing concessional tariff mechanisms.
