Islamabad, May 3, 2026: Deputy Chairman Senate Syedaal Khan Nasar on Saturday said that a free and responsible press is the cornerstone of any democratic society, stressing that independent media plays a crucial role in ensuring accountability and keeping citizens informed.

In his message on World Press Freedom Day, the deputy chairman said May 3 serves as a reminder of the collective commitment to uphold freedom of expression and the public’s right to access information.

He noted that journalism is not merely about reporting news, but also a powerful instrument for promoting truth, transparency, and justice in society.

Highlighting the challenges confronting the media landscape, Syedaal Khan Nasar said journalists today face complex issues including fake news, digital propaganda, and the spread of unverified information. In such circumstances, he said, the importance of responsible, ethical, and fact-based journalism has grown significantly.

He urged media professionals to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, impartiality, and national responsibility.

Paying tribute to journalists across Pakistan, the deputy chairman acknowledged their dedication and sacrifices in delivering accurate information despite difficult conditions. He reaffirmed Parliament’s commitment to ensuring the safety of journalists, protecting their professional independence, and creating an enabling environment for free media operations.

He further stated that the Constitution of Pakistan guarantees freedom of expression, adding that it is the state’s responsibility to safeguard these fundamental rights.

The deputy chairman reiterated that the Senate of Pakistan would continue to play a proactive role through legislation and policy measures aimed at strengthening press freedom and protecting journalists’ rights.

Concluding his message, Syedaal Khan Nasar said that a strong, independent, and credible media is essential for a stable and progressive Pakistan, and called for collective efforts to uphold and promote the values of press freedom.
