Colombo, May 18, 2026: The Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2026 will officially commence on July 17, with a high-profile opening clash between reigning champions Jaffna Kings and runners-up Galle Gladiators, marking a repeat of the 2024 final.
The tournament opener will be played under lights at the historic Sinhalese Sports Club Ground, with the match scheduled to begin at 7:30 pm following an official opening ceremony.
Organisers confirmed that the 2026 edition will run from July 17 to August 8, with matches initially planned across multiple venues including Colombo, Dambulla and Kandy before returning to Colombo for the knockout stage. The final will be held at the R. Premadasa Stadium, with a reserve day scheduled for August 9.
The league will feature five franchises representing Jaffna, Colombo, Kandy, Galle and Dambulla, although official team branding and ownership structures are yet to be announced by Sri Lanka Cricket.
Player registration for the tournament opened on May 8 and will close on May 20, with direct signings permitted until May 22. A player draft is scheduled for June 1, marking a return to the draft system after two seasons of auctions and eliminating player retention rules for a complete squad reshuffle.
Each franchise will be required to assemble a squad of at least 18 players, expandable to 20, including two additional local picks. Teams must also include a minimum of two Under-23 emerging players, with at least one required to feature in the playing XI. Franchises will be allowed up to four overseas players in the playing XI.
Sri Lanka Cricket has also revised earlier discussions around player marketing criteria, removing a proposed social media follower requirement for marquee categories after public debate.
Organisers have maintained strict regulations on player conduct and media obligations, with match fee penalties ranging from 5% to 50% for breaches of engagement standards, as the league aims to strengthen professionalism and fan interaction for the upcoming season.
