Mohammad Amir reportedly becomes British citizen, opens door to IPL participation

Karachi, May 20, 2026: Former Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Amir has reportedly obtained British citizenship after acquiring a UK passport, potentially making him eligible to participate in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

The development gained attention after Amir reshared a social media post referring to his reported change in nationality status. The left-arm pacer had previously hinted at the possibility of playing in the IPL once he became eligible.

Last year, the 34-year-old publicly discussed the prospect of featuring in the IPL as a British citizen. Amir acquired UK citizenship following his marriage to British national Narjis Khan.

A member of Pakistan’s victorious squads in the 2009 ICC World Twenty20 and the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy, Amir has repeatedly stated that he does not intend to represent England at international level despite being eligible.

However, he has expressed interest in pursuing franchise cricket opportunities around the world, including the IPL.

Speaking during a television programme last year, Amir had said: “By next year, I will have the opportunity to play in the IPL, and if given the chance, then why not? I will play in the IPL.”

Amir also revealed a preference for joining Royal Challengers Bengaluru if selected.

Former Pakistan batter Ahmed Shehzad, speaking during the same discussion, suggested that Royal Challengers Bengaluru could benefit from Amir’s experience, particularly in strengthening their bowling attack.

“RCB need a bowler like Amir to fix their bowling woes. They have a strong batting unit, but their bowling has always been a concern. If Amir plays for RCB, they will win the title,” Shehzad had remarked.

Pakistani players have not participated in the IPL since 2008 due to strained political relations between Pakistan and India.

Former all-rounder Azhar Mahmood remains the only Pakistan-born cricketer to feature in the IPL while holding British citizenship.
