Islamabad, June 11, 2026: Speaker National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq has said that the elimination of child labour is both a national obligation and a moral responsibility, stressing that children are the country’s most valuable asset and the foundation of a prosperous, peaceful and progressive Pakistan.
In his message on the occasion of the World Day Against Child Labour, observed globally on June 12, the Speaker emphasized that protecting children from exploitation and ensuring their access to education, healthcare and equal opportunities remain among the nation’s highest priorities.
Sardar Ayaz Sadiq noted that child labour continues to deprive millions of children of their childhood, education and opportunities for growth and development. He said every child has the fundamental right to grow up in a safe, healthy and supportive environment, free from all forms of exploitation and abuse.
Highlighting constitutional safeguards for children, the Speaker said Article 11 of the Constitution prohibits the employment of children below the age of 14 in factories, mines and other hazardous occupations. He added that Article 25-A guarantees free and compulsory education for children between the ages of five and 16, while Article 37(e) obligates the state to ensure humane working conditions and protect children from unsuitable employment.
The Speaker appreciated the role of the Parliamentary Caucus on Child Rights, describing it as an active platform working across the country to promote and protect children’s rights. He said the caucus continues to strengthen child protection mechanisms, raise public awareness and support the effective implementation of relevant laws.
He also commended the caucus for preparing a comprehensive report on Out-of-School Children (OOSC), which identifies key causes behind the issue in different provinces and offers context-specific solutions tailored to local realities.
Sardar Ayaz Sadiq reaffirmed Parliament’s commitment to strengthening child protection through effective legislation. He said federal and provincial governments are implementing laws aimed at preventing child labour, ensuring safe environments for children and safeguarding their rights in line with constitutional provisions and international commitments.
The Speaker observed that poverty, limited access to education and social inequalities remain among the major drivers of child labour. He called for coordinated efforts by the government, civil society, educational institutions, parents and all segments of society to ensure that children are provided opportunities for education and development rather than being forced into labour.
“Investment in children’s education, health and welfare is, in essence, an investment in Pakistan’s brighter future,” he remarked, reiterating Parliament’s firm resolve to eradicate child labour in all its forms.
Deputy Speaker National Assembly Syed Ghulam Mustafa Shah, in his message marking the day, described child labour as a serious challenge to the rights and development of children. He said children engaged in hazardous labour are deprived of education, healthcare, recreation and opportunities to realize their full potential.
He emphasized that every child deserves a safe and supportive environment where they can learn, grow and become productive members of society.
The Deputy Speaker stressed that eliminating child labour requires collective action by the government, civil society, educational institutions, parents and society at large. He noted that poverty, lack of educational facilities and social inequalities are key contributing factors that must be addressed through effective policy measures and public awareness campaigns.
Syed Ghulam Mustafa Shah reiterated the National Assembly’s commitment to safeguarding children’s rights and promoting their welfare through effective legislation and sustained policy efforts.
