Islamabad, June 11, 2026: Convenor of the Parliamentary Caucus on Child Rights (PCCR), Dr. Nikhat Shakeel Khan, has reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to protecting children from exploitation and ensuring their fundamental rights to education, dignity, safety and a secure future.
In her message on the occasion of the World Day Against Child Labour, observed annually on June 12, Dr. Nikhat said child labour remains one of the most pressing challenges facing society, depriving children of their childhood, denying them access to education and exposing them to physical, psychological and social harm.
She noted that child labour not only affects individual children but also perpetuates cycles of poverty and inequality, hindering national progress and sustainable development.
Dr. Nikhat emphasized that eliminating child labour requires a comprehensive and sustained approach that extends beyond awareness campaigns. She called for strong political commitment, effective enforcement of existing laws, strengthened child protection systems, expanded access to quality education and enhanced social safety nets for vulnerable families.
She stressed that addressing the root causes of child labour, including poverty, school exclusion and limited economic opportunities, is essential to achieving lasting change.
The PCCR convenor said the Parliamentary Caucus on Child Rights remains fully committed to advancing the child rights agenda through legislative reforms, policy advocacy and parliamentary oversight. She added that the caucus continues to work closely with relevant stakeholders to strengthen child protection frameworks and ensure that children’s rights remain at the centre of national priorities.
“Every child belongs in a classroom, not in a workplace,” Dr. Nikhat stated, describing education as the most powerful tool for breaking the cycle of poverty and securing a brighter and more equitable future for the nation.
Calling for collective action, she urged government institutions, civil society organizations, development partners, the private sector, media, communities and families to join hands in eliminating child labour in all its forms.
She said protecting children is not only a legal obligation but also a moral responsibility that reflects the values and character of society.
Dr. Nikhat concluded by calling for renewed national resolve to build a Pakistan where every child is safe, educated, empowered and able to realize their full potential.
“Together, we can ensure a future free from child labour,” she said.
