Dubai, November 15, 2024 -The International Cricket Council (ICC) has formally requested the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to provide a written explanation for its decision not to send the Indian cricket team to Pakistan for the 2025 Champions Trophy, media reports revealed on Friday.
The BCCI had verbally informed the ICC of its decision to skip the tournament, citing “security concerns.” Following this, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) asked the ICC to share India’s written response, signaling a potential request for evidence supporting India’s stance.
Reports suggest that if India fails to provide satisfactory reasons, the ICC may insist on their participation. Should India still refuse, another team could replace them in the tournament.
Pakistan, the defending Champions Trophy winners, is set to launch the trophy tour from Islamabad on November 16, despite uncertainty over India’s participation and the tournament’s format.
While the hybrid model was used for last year’s Asia Cup, where India played its matches in Sri Lanka, PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi recently stated there had been no discussions about using this model for the Champions Trophy.
South Africa and the UAE are reportedly being considered as alternative hosts if the tournament cannot proceed in Pakistan. However, such a move might prompt Pakistan to withdraw from the tournament.
BCCI Vice-President Rajeev Shukla reiterated that India’s travel to Pakistan is contingent on clearance from the Indian government.
This situation has raised questions about the tournament’s future, with the ICC facing the challenge of maintaining neutrality while ensuring participation from all key teams.
