PPP nominates Amjad Hussain for Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Minister as government formation process gains momentum

Gilgit, June 20, 2026: The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has nominated Amjad Hussain Advocate as its candidate for the office of Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan, marking a key development in the ongoing process of government formation in the region.

Amjad Hussain, who currently serves as the provincial president of the PPP in Gilgit-Baltistan, is expected to play a central role in post-election political negotiations as the party consolidates its position in the regional assembly.

Party sources said the decision reflects an internal consensus within the PPP to promote local leadership from Gilgit, and marks the first time the party has nominated a leader from the region for the chief minister’s post.

The move comes after the PPP emerged as the largest party in the Gilgit-Baltistan elections, securing nine seats in the 33-member assembly. With additional reserved seats, the party’s total strength has risen to 13, placing it in a strong position to form the next government.

The Election Commission Gilgit-Baltistan (ECGB) has already notified results for 21 constituencies, with the remaining seats finalised after partial re-polling and legal proceedings. According to official figures, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) holds nine seats, the Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party (IPP) has six, the Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen (MWM) has one, and one independent candidate has also been elected.

The PPP has expressed confidence in forming the next government, with senior party figures indicating that consultations are underway regarding coalition partners and power-sharing arrangements.

Political observers note that the nomination of Amjad Hussain is likely to influence ongoing negotiations, as parties attempt to secure a governing majority in the semi-autonomous region.

Gilgit-Baltistan, a strategically significant mountainous region bordering China, has historically seen its political landscape closely aligned with national-level party dynamics in Islamabad.

The region’s political future now hinges on coalition talks, with the PPP, PML-N, and other stakeholders engaged in discussions to finalise the next government setup.
