Mumbai, July 15,2026: Bollywood actor Aamir Khan has become the focus of renewed public debate after an Islamic scholar in India’s Uttar Pradesh reportedly issued a fatwa objecting to his recent marriage to Gauri Spratt.
According to Indian media reports, Aamir Khan and Gauri Spratt solemnised their marriage through a court ceremony on July 5. The reported interfaith union has since drawn mixed reactions on social media and among religious circles.
Reports said a senior cleric associated with a Muslim religious institution in Uttar Pradesh stated that, under his interpretation of Islamic law, a Muslim man should not marry a non-Muslim woman unless she embraces Islam beforehand. He reportedly described such marriages as impermissible and urged those involved to seek repentance if they believed they had acted contrary to religious teachings.
In a video circulating on social media, the cleric reportedly said marriages conducted in violation of his interpretation of Sharia are sinful and that those who fail to recognise them as such would be accountable before God.
The scholar also criticised Aamir Khan’s latest marriage, claiming it reflected poorly on Islam and expressing concern over the actor’s interfaith marriages. His remarks have reignited online discussions about religion, personal freedom and interfaith marriages, with users expressing sharply divided views.
The reported fatwa comes days after Aamir Khan publicly rejected allegations that he promotes “love jihad” through his personal relationships.
Responding to the criticism, the actor said his family has always respected people of different faiths and has never pressured anyone to convert for marriage. He noted that none of his wives—Reena Dutta, Kiran Rao or Gauri Spratt—converted to Islam before marrying him.
Aamir said all of his marriages were legally registered through the court system and were founded on mutual respect rather than religious conversion. He added that his personal life reflects his belief in accepting people regardless of their faith.
His remarks drew praise from supporters, who viewed them as an endorsement of religious tolerance, while critics continued to question his decision to enter into interfaith marriages.
Gauri Spratt, who hails from Bengaluru, is associated with the beauty and wellness industry. Media reports say she has a son from a previous marriage.
The marriage marks Aamir Khan’s third. He was first married to Reena Dutta, with whom he has two children, Junaid and Ira Khan. Following their divorce, he married filmmaker Kiran Rao, and the couple have a son, Azad Rao Khan. Although Aamir and Kiran announced their separation in 2021, they continue to co-parent their son.
The reported fatwa has added a new dimension to the public discussion surrounding the actor’s marriage, reviving broader debates in India over interfaith relationships, religious interpretations and individual freedom of choice.
