Beckenham, August 12, 2026: England have received a timely boost ahead of their three-match home Test series against Pakistan, with emerging opener Emilio Gay set to feature in a three-day practice match against the visitors beginning Thursday.
The 26-year-old batter had emerged as a fitness concern after being forced to retire hurt while playing for Durham against Middlesex in the One-Day Cup last Friday.
Gay initially experienced discomfort in his right shoulder during the sixth over of Durham’s innings before aggravating the injury at the start of the seventh over while playing a straight drive against Toby Roland-Jones.
A member of Durham’s medical team immediately attended to the batter and escorted him from the field after he had scored nine runs off 17 deliveries.
However, Gay has since been named in the 14-member Professional County Club (PCC) Select XI for the practice match against Pakistan, alongside England internationals Shoaib Bashir and Matthew Fisher.
His selection indicates that the opener is expected to be fit for the Test series, which begins at Headingley in Leeds on August 19.
Gay has emerged as an option for England at the top of the order, and his availability would provide a boost to the hosts as they prepare for a new Test era under returning captain Joe Root.
Bashir, meanwhile, is unlikely to feature in the first Test despite being included in the practice-match squad. England are expected to favour a four-man pace attack and use Dan Lawrence as their off-spin option.
The practice match was originally scheduled to begin on August 11 but was postponed by a day following an agreement between the two sides, allowing England to field the strongest possible invitational team ahead of the opening Test.
The three-Test series will begin in Leeds on August 19 and will be followed by matches at other venues in England.
