Darwin, August 16, 2026: Bangladesh produced one of the biggest upsets in recent Test cricket, defeating world No. 1 Australia by nine wickets in the first Test at Marrara Oval on Sunday to record their first-ever Test victory on Australian soil.
Bangladesh, who had entered the match as overwhelming underdogs after being bowled out for just 54 in their warm-up against a Cricket Australia XI, completed the historic chase of 57 runs in the fourth afternoon. Mominul Haque hit the winning runs at 2:36pm local time, triggering celebrations among the Bangladesh players, support staff and a small but vocal group of travelling fans.
Australia were dismissed for 284 in their second innings after Bangladesh had established a 228-run first-innings lead. The hosts had earlier been bowled out for 198, while Bangladesh posted 426 in their first innings.
Mominul finished unbeaten on 30, while Shadman Islam remained not out on 25 as Bangladesh reached 57 for one to seal a memorable victory.
The result was particularly significant as Bangladesh had failed to win either of their previous two Tests in Australia and had not played a Test in the country for 23 years.
Bangladesh’s victory was built on a remarkable collective performance, with pace bowler Hasan Mahmud emerging as one of the outstanding performers of the match.
Mahmud claimed nine wickets across Australia’s two innings, following his career-best 6-55 in the first innings with 3-56 in the second.
He played a decisive role on the fourth morning by removing Australia’s in-form Cameron Green after the all-rounder had fought for almost five hours to keep Bangladesh at bay.
Green scored a determined 104 from 201 balls, including four boundaries, and became the third Australian batter to score a century in the match. However, he received little support from the lower order as Bangladesh’s bowlers maintained relentless pressure.
Off-spinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz was equally influential. After scoring 65 in Bangladesh’s first innings, he claimed 5-66 in Australia’s second innings to complete his third five-wicket haul in an overseas Test and 15th overall.
Mehidy dismissed Alex Carey for 30, Beau Webster and Pat Cummins before completing his five-wicket haul by trapping Nathan Lyon leg before wicket.
Taskin Ahmed also contributed by removing Mitchell Starc, while Ebadot Hossain claimed two wickets in Australia’s first innings.
Australia resumed the fourth day still trailing Bangladesh by 67 runs with four wickets down, but the visitors quickly tightened their grip on the match.
Mehidy’s disciplined bowling created pressure at one end before Carey’s dismissal opened the door for Bangladesh. Webster was then bowled by a delivery that drifted away and removed his off stump, while Cummins fell to Mehidy after edging an inside delivery to short leg.
Green’s century briefly delayed Bangladesh’s victory charge, but Mahmud eventually found the decisive breakthrough when an under-edge from the Australian batter stayed low and crashed into the stumps.
Mehidy then dismissed Lyon to wrap up the Australian innings at 284 and leave Bangladesh with a modest target.
