Islamabad, August 19, 2026: Pakistan on Wednesday summoned the US Chargé d’Affaires in Islamabad and lodged a strong demarche over remarks by US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor regarding the status of Jammu and Kashmir during his visit to Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).

According to the Foreign Office, Pakistan strongly condemned and categorically rejected the ambassador’s characterisation of Jammu and Kashmir as a “part of India”.

The Foreign Office reiterated Pakistan’s position that Jammu and Kashmir is an internationally recognised disputed territory whose final status remains to be determined in accordance with relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.

Pakistan conveyed its concern that the US ambassador’s remarks contradicted what it described as the longstanding and well-documented US position on the Jammu and Kashmir dispute and were inconsistent with Washington’s stated commitment to international law and the UN Charter.

During the demarche, Pakistan also referred to US President Donald Trump’s offer to mediate between Pakistan and India to help resolve the Jammu and Kashmir dispute following Marka-e-Haq.

The US side was urged to ensure that public statements by its officials remain consistent with the disputed status of Jammu and Kashmir and do not prejudice efforts aimed at a peaceful resolution of the longstanding dispute.
