Islamabad, September 6, 2026: Acting President Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani has paid tribute to the officers and soldiers of Pakistan’s Armed Forces, as well as the martyrs and ghazis, on the occasion of Defence and Martyrs Day.
In his message, Gilani said September 6 marked one of the defining chapters in Pakistan’s history, recalling the nation’s resolve, unity and sacrifices made in defence of the country.
He said the Armed Forces had demonstrated courage, professionalism and strategic capability during the 1965 war, while the nation had stood firmly alongside them, demonstrating what Pakistan could achieve through unity.
The Acting President said the sacrifices of the martyrs formed the foundation of Pakistan’s freedom, sovereignty and security. He paid tribute to the martyrs and their families, saying the country stood as a sovereign state because of their sacrifices.
Gilani also highlighted the role of institutions such as the Fauji Foundation in supporting the families of martyrs, including assistance with education, medical expenses and pensions.
Referring to Marka-e-Haq, the Acting President commended the courage and professional capabilities demonstrated by the Armed Forces and acknowledged the role of the country’s military leadership in safeguarding national security while contributing to regional peace and dialogue.
Paying tribute to Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, NI (M), HJ, Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces, as well as the wider military leadership, Gilani said Pakistan was a peace-loving country committed to genuine efforts for lasting peace and stability in the region.
He said initiatives such as the Makkah Agreement reflected Pakistan’s preference for dialogue and diplomacy over the use of force.
The Acting President said Pakistan’s greatest strength lay in its people and Armed Forces standing together, adding that the mission of the martyrs should be carried forward through collective efforts for national unity, democracy and development.
Gilani prayed that Allah Almighty grant Pakistan peace and security, protect the personnel of the Armed Forces and elevate the ranks of the martyrs.
