London, September 28, 2026: England wicketkeeper-batsman Jos Buttler will miss the team’s upcoming one-day international series in Pakistan after suffering a hamstring injury.
Buttler was forced to retire hurt during England’s ODI against Sri Lanka at Headingley last week before returning to the crease and batting through the pain.
The 36-year-old missed England’s 223-run victory over Sri Lanka at The Oval on Sunday and is not expected to recover in time for the tri-series involving Pakistan and Sri Lanka in October.
Buttler recently became the first England batsman to score 10,000 runs in international white-ball cricket, combining his totals from ODIs and T20 internationals.
“Jos won’t be in Pakistan,” England limited-overs coach Brendon McCullum confirmed.
“We know he’s an incredible athlete, we know he’s supremely fit and an ultra-professional, so he’ll do everything he can to get back as soon as possible but it’s hard to judge how long that will be,” McCullum said.
“It’s disappointing not to have Jos but it will be good for us to see where we’re at,” he added.
England are scheduled to play two matches against Pakistan and two against Sri Lanka in the tri-series, followed by a potential final.
Buttler’s absence is likely to provide Jordan Cox with another opportunity to establish himself as England’s wicketkeeper-batsman.
Cox impressed on his return to England’s ODI side, scoring 76 off 52 balls against Sri Lanka at The Oval. It was his first appearance for England in the format since 2024.
