Muscat, October 5,2026: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has been honoured with the UN-Habitat Scroll of Honour Award in Muscat, Oman, for the “Apni Chhat Apna Ghar” housing initiative.
The award was presented during the global observance of World Habitat Day 2026. The UN-Habitat Scroll of Honour recognises individuals and initiatives that make outstanding contributions to adequate housing and sustainable urban development.
The Punjab government launched the “Apni Chhat Apna Ghar” programme on August 21, 2024, with the objective of providing affordable housing to eligible residents across the province over a period of four and a half years.
Senior Punjab Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb described the recognition as a proud moment for Pakistan and Punjab.
“A historic, deeply proud and emotional moment for Punjab and Pakistan,” Aurangzeb said in a post on X.
She said the award represented global recognition of Maryam Nawaz’s housing vision and the programme’s focus on providing ordinary families with secure homes, dignity and better prospects.
According to Aurangzeb, more than 200,000 homes have already been delivered across Punjab under the initiative.
“As a proud daughter of Punjab, I feel immense pride seeing the vision of our CM recognised on the world stage,” she said, adding that the initiative had provided families with homes as well as a sense of security and hope.
Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat also expressed pride in the recognition and praised Housing Minister Bilal Yasin for implementing the chief minister’s housing vision with commitment and responsibility.
He described the award as an acknowledgement of the work and determination behind the initiative.
According to the programme’s official website, “Apni Chhat Apna Ghar” is designed to facilitate low-income families, particularly those living in rented accommodation or informal settlements, in obtaining their own homes.
The UN-Habitat Scroll of Honour Award was established in 1989 and is among the organisation’s major recognitions for contributions to adequate housing and sustainable urban development. The 2026 awards are being presented in Muscat as part of World Habitat Day activities.
