Lahore, November 2,2026: The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Monday directed jail authorities to arrange a meeting between Noreen Niazi, sister of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, and her two daughters on Tuesday.
Justice Abher Gul Khan issued the directives while hearing petitions challenging the extensions in the detention orders of Imran Khan’s sisters, Noreen Niazi, Uzma Khan and Aleema Khanum.
The judge also summoned the Lahore deputy commissioner in person on November 4 to explain the extensions in the detention orders of Noreen and Uzma.
The three women were detained under the Punjab Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) Ordinance, 1960, in September as PTI prepared for a protest march towards Islamabad demanding Imran Khan’s release.
Aleema was detained on September 20 for 30 days, while Noreen and Uzma were taken into custody the following day for the same period. Their detentions were challenged after the initial 30-day period expired last month. The Punjab government subsequently informed the court that their detention had been extended for another 30 days.
During Monday’s hearing, petitioners’ counsel Rana Mudassar Umar told the court that Noreen’s two daughters and lawyers wanted to meet her. Expressing concern over her health, he said she was an elderly woman and her actual condition could only be assessed after meeting her.
Noreen was shifted to the Punjab Institute of Cardiology (PIC) following a deterioration in her health, on the recommendation of doctors at Kot Lakhpat Jail, where she is being held. Later, Prime Minister’s Adviser on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah informed the Senate that she was doing well after receiving medical treatment in Lahore.
During the hearing, Justice Khan asked a provincial law officer whether a specific day had been designated for prisoners’ meetings. The law officer said jail authorities had no objection to allowing the requested meeting.
The law officer also submitted a report on behalf of the Home Department, stating that Noreen had been taken to hospital for treatment and subsequently transferred back to jail on doctors’ advice. He added that her daughter, Hajira Niazi, had been allowed to meet her at the hospital on October 29.
The court subsequently directed jail authorities to facilitate Noreen’s meeting with her two daughters on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the judge adjourned until next week the hearing of a petition challenging Aleema’s fresh detention.
Earlier, the LHC had sought reports from the Punjab Home Department in connection with the detention cases.
Justice Abher Gul Khan directed the department to submit its reports by 2pm while hearing petitions filed by Noreen’s daughter, Sakeena, and Aleema’s son, Shahrez Khan.
The petitioners’ counsel argued that the detention of Aleema, Noreen and Uzma had been extended unlawfully. He said that after the expiry of the initial 30-day detention period, the Lahore deputy commissioner had issued notifications extending their detention.
The counsel further alleged that the detained women had not been allowed to meet their family members or lawyers and requested the court to declare the fresh detention notifications illegal.
PTI Secretary General Advocate Salman Akram Raja also informed the court that Aleema’s driver had been detained. He requested leniency for the driver, saying his family was deeply distressed by his detention.
Justice Khan subsequently sought reports from the provincial Home Department, observing that the matter would be examined after reviewing the submitted reports.
