Gujrat, November 7,2026: Jamaat-e-Islami Punjab Ameer Dr Tariq Saleem has said that the recent reduction in petroleum prices was the outcome of his party’s sustained campaign against the petroleum levy, but maintained that the relief offered to the public remained inadequate.
Addressing the oath-taking ceremony of newly elected Jamaat-e-Islami Gujrat Emir Ansar Mahmood Dhool, Dr Saleem said the campaign against the petroleum levy was aimed at protecting citizens’ fundamental rights and securing economic justice.
He urged the government to take practical steps to address inflation, the economic crisis and the growing hardships faced by ordinary people, saying public concerns could not be resolved through announcements and promises alone.
Dr Saleem stressed the need to explain the underlying causes of inflation to the public and raise a strong voice for resolving their problems. He said Jamaat-e-Islami would continue its struggle for an Islamic system, the protection of public rights and relief from economic difficulties.
Reiterating the party’s position on the petroleum levy, he described it as an unjust financial burden on citizens and called for its complete abolition.
He said Jamaat-e-Islami had conducted a nationwide campaign against the levy, during which roads were blocked at 510 locations, sit-ins were held in different cities for around six weeks, public rallies were organised in dozens of cities and a Train March was launched from Karachi.
According to Dr Saleem, the party temporarily suspended its campaign for a few days after the prime minister assured it that a substantial reduction in the petroleum levy would provide relief to the public. He added that the decision was also taken in response to the prime minister’s request to postpone the Train March.
Dr Saleem said the levy had placed an unbearable financial burden on citizens and made everyday life increasingly difficult. He maintained that the party’s public movement was intended to end what it described as economic exploitation and secure meaningful relief for the people.
