PM orders swift action against Islamabad rioters

Islamabad, December 9, 2024: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed authorities to take immediate and decisive action against those responsible for the recent riots in Islamabad, warning that attempts to destabilize the country’s economy will be met with strict measures.

During a high-level security meeting attended by Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, and other senior officials, the prime minister underscored the importance of maintaining order without targeting innocent civilians. “We will not allow anyone to create chaos or sabotage our rapidly stabilizing economy,” he said, urging swift actions against those involved in violence, vandalism, and damage to public and private property.

The prime minister emphasized the need to identify and gather concrete evidence against the perpetrators, directing the formation of a task force to expedite investigations and actions related to the unrest. He stressed that only those directly involved should face arrest, ensuring that no innocent individuals are wrongfully detained.

Additionally, Sharif instructed the Ministry of Law to integrate the Federal Prosecution Service under its purview and ordered the expedited construction of Islamabad’s new jail, with immediate release of necessary funds. Officials informed him that the facility is expected to be completed by March 2025.

The meeting also reviewed updates on the Safe City initiative, which aims to enhance surveillance across Islamabad through expanded camera coverage. These measures are part of broader efforts to bolster security and prevent future disturbances in the capital.
