Karachi, December 16, 2024: Former Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi filed a petition in the Sindh High Court (SHC) on Monday, challenging the recently passed 26th constitutional amendment.

Abbasi’s plea seeks the court’s intervention to halt the appointment of new judges to high courts until a decision is reached on his petition. He also requested the SHC to bar the Judicial Commission of Pakistan from functioning during this period.

The petition calls for the 26th amendment to be declared null and void. The federal and Sindh governments, as well as the Senate chairman and National Assembly speaker, have been named as respondents in the case.

This move follows earlier challenges to the 26th amendment filed by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) in the Supreme Court.

The 26th amendment has sparked legal and political debate, with critics questioning its implications for judicial independence and governance.
