Melbourne, December 26, 2024: Indian cricket star Virat Kohli has been penalized by the International Cricket Council (ICC) following an on-field altercation with Australia’s debutant Sam Konstas during the Boxing Day Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

The incident occurred at the end of the 10th over on Day 1 of the Melbourne Test when Kohli made physical contact with Konstas, bumping his shoulder. This led to a heated exchange between the two players, with Australian opener Usman Khawaja stepping in to mediate.

According to the ICC, Kohli was penalized for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct, specifically for “inappropriate physical contact with a player.” The penalty includes a fine of 20% of his match fee and the addition of one demerit point. The specific clause breached falls under Article 2.12 of the ICC Code, which addresses physical contact during an international match, whether with players, support personnel, officials, or spectators.

Kohli accepted the sanction, and no formal hearing was required. Match Referee Andy Pycroft imposed the penalty, with the charge being leveled by on-field umpires Joel Wilson and Michael Gough, third umpire Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid, and fourth umpire Shawn Craig.

The incident drew criticism from several cricket experts. Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting, after reviewing the replay, was outspoken in his assessment, stating, “Virat walked an entire pitch to his right and instigated the confrontation. There’s no doubt in my mind whatsoever.”

Former umpire Simon Taufel also weighed in, suggesting that Kohli’s actions could indeed be seen as “inappropriate physical contact” under the ICC Code. “Virat Kohli actually changed his line to enter Sam Konstas’ personal space. This is a clause in the ICC Code of Conduct, and the umpires and referee will certainly consider it,” he explained.

Ravi Shastri, former coach of India, also criticized Kohli’s behavior, stating, “There is a line, and you don’t want to overstep it.”

Konstas, who made an impressive debut by scoring 60 off 65 balls, including six fours and two sixes, was asked about the altercation during the post-match press conference. He downplayed the incident, saying, “I was just adjusting my gloves when I think he accidentally bumped into me. I think it’s just part of cricket, just the tension of the game. For me, it was all about backing myself and trying to bring my best version to the game, and I was lucky enough to score some runs today.”
