Heavy rain floods thousands of tents in Gaza

Gaza, December 31, 2024: Thousands of displaced Palestinian families in the Gaza Strip faced severe devastation last night as torrential rain and strong winds wreaked havoc on already dire living conditions in displacement camps.

According to the Wafa news agency, the harsh weather flooded tents, destroyed makeshift shelters, and left families struggling to endure the bitter cold without adequate protection. Southern areas, including Deir Al-Balah and Mawasi Khan Yunis, were particularly hard-hit, with tents blown away by powerful winds, forcing residents to salvage their belongings amidst rising floodwaters.

Tragedy struck yet again, as medical sources confirmed the death of another infant due to freezing temperatures, marking the seventh such casualty within a week. A 20-day-old baby had died earlier this week under similar conditions, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry.

Rescue crews responded to hundreds of distress calls from desperate families as flooding inundated temporary shelters. Despite their efforts, many evacuees were relocated to equally unsuitable shelters, leaving them exposed to relentless rain and freezing conditions. Parents pleaded for help to save their children from the rising water, but limited resources and relentless weather compounded the crisis.

Since October 7, 2023, Gaza has been grappling with the aftermath of an Israeli air and land offensive that has killed over 45,500 people, mostly civilians, according to Gaza authorities. The offensive has indiscriminately targeted women, children, and essential workers, leaving the enclave in ruins. Thousands remain buried under rubble as the population faces critical shortages of food, medicine, and basic necessities.

This latest calamity underscores the dire humanitarian crisis in Gaza, as displaced families endure relentless suffering amid one of the harshest winters in recent memory.
