Islamabad, January 1, 2025: The federal cabinet, under the leadership of Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, lauded Pakistan’s assumption of a two-year term as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), calling it a landmark achievement on the diplomatic front.

During a meeting held at the Prime Minister’s House, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar briefed the cabinet on the significance of this development. He highlighted the opportunities this role offers for advancing Pakistan’s global agenda and strengthening its international standing.

Prime Minister Sharif instructed the cabinet to prepare a detailed report on public sector imports through Gwadar Port over the last three months, to be presented at the next cabinet session.

The cabinet gave in-principle approval for amendments to Section 3(7) of the Pakistan Telecommunication (Reorganization) Act, aimed at modernizing the regulatory framework. It also approved regulations for appointing Information Group officers as Press Officers in Pakistan’s diplomatic missions abroad, ensuring a transparent and merit-based process.

The registration of Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences, Thatta, was approved, alongside the reconstitution of a committee to set prices for life-saving medical equipment, as per a Supreme Court judgment. The cabinet also approved the National Food Safety, Animal and Plant Health Authority Bill for submission to Parliament. It ratified decisions from the Cabinet Committee on Legislative Cases (December 17), the Economic Coordination Committee (December 18), and the Cabinet Committee on State-Owned Enterprises (December 24). However, amendments to the Citizenship Act were deferred.

The cabinet emphasized that Pakistan’s role at the UNSC is a testament to its growing diplomatic influence and commitment to addressing global challenges. The government pledged to utilize this opportunity to advocate for peace, security, and sustainable development on the international stage.
