Islamabad, January 14, 2025: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has questioned the justification for capacity payments made to public sector power generation companies (GENCOs), emphasizing that these are government projects.
Addressing the federal cabinet on Monday, the premier commended the energy ministry’s task force for achieving the target of generating 3,000 megawatts but raised concerns over capacity payments, especially in foreign currency. “Making capacity payments in dollars poses a significant challenge,” he stated, urging for collective efforts to resolve the issue.
PM Shehbaz also highlighted the critical state of education, particularly for girls, during the federal cabinet meeting. Referring to data presented at a recent girls’ summit in Islamabad, he noted that 22.8% of Pakistani children are out of school, with girls making up the majority.
Calling it a “significant problem,” the prime minister stressed the importance of collaboration between the federal and provincial governments, as education is a devolved subject. He directed the education minister to work closely with provinces to address the challenges and expressed hope that Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui could play a pivotal role in resolving these issues, terming it a “tremendous national service.”
PM Shehbaz lauded the resumption of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flights to Europe, calling the first flight to Paris a “significant success” after a prolonged ban. He expressed optimism that flights to London would soon follow as restrictions on the national carrier are gradually lifted.
The premier announced the establishment of a Pakistan-Iran trade corridor at Panjgur, which he said would enhance legal trade and help curb smuggling.
Shehbaz Sharif also highlighted progress in restoring peace in Kurram following a recent peace agreement. He noted that bunkers are being dismantled, and food and medical supplies are being provided, describing these developments as positive. He urged stakeholders to maintain peace and prevent future conflicts through dialogue.
The prime minister praised the Pakistan Armed Forces for their ongoing operations against terrorist groups. He cited a report from the military’s media wing stating that 27 terrorists were killed during recent security operations in Waziristan, underscoring the government’s commitment to combating militancy.
PM Shehbaz concluded by calling for unity and coordinated efforts across all sectors to tackle the country’s pressing challenges.
