Islamabad, January 25, 2025: The National Assembly’s Finance Committee has approved a proposal to raise the salaries and benefits of members of parliament (MPs) to match those of federal secretaries. Following the committee’s approval, a summary of the proposal has been forwarded to Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif for further consideration.
Sources within the Assembly Secretariat revealed that the monthly salary and benefits for Members of National Assembly (MNAs) and Senators will be set at 519,000 Pakistani rupees, once the proposal is approved. This comes in response to a request from 67 members of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) for a pay increase.
Political parties, including the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), have expressed their support for the salary hike. Upon approval, MPs will receive benefits on par with those of federal secretaries.
While some parliamentarians had advocated for a monthly salary of 1 million rupees, Speaker Ayaz Sadiq rejected this higher demand. The Finance Committee, as part of the 2024-2025 financial budget, holds the authority to determine pay raises for MPs.
