Menlo Park, February 15, 2025: Meta Platforms has announced the creation of a new division within its Reality Labs unit, focusing on the development of AI-powered humanoid robots designed to assist with physical tasks. The move highlights Meta’s growing investment in robotics and artificial intelligence.

In an internal memo, Meta’s Chief Technology Officer Andrew Bosworth revealed that the newly formed robotics product group will focus on research and development of consumer humanoid robots, aiming to maximize the capabilities of Llama, Meta’s core series of AI foundation models. These models power various generative AI products across Meta’s social media platforms.

The new robotics division will be led by Marc Whitten, former CEO of self-driving car company Cruise. Bosworth confirmed Whitten’s appointment as Meta’s Vice President of Robotics, signaling the company’s strategic push into AI-driven automation and robotics innovation.

Meta’s expansion into humanoid robotics aligns with a broader trend of tech giants investing in AI-integrated robotics to revolutionize consumer and industrial applications.
