Dubai, February 23, 2025: Virat Kohli has once again etched his name in cricket history by becoming the fastest batter to reach 14,000 ODI runs, surpassing Sachin Tendulkar’s long-standing record. The Indian star achieved this milestone during the Champions Trophy 2025 match against Pakistan at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Sunday.
The 36-year-old reached the landmark in just 287 innings, shattering Tendulkar’s record of 350 innings. Kohli brought up the feat when he scored his 15th run in India’s chase against Pakistan.
Kohli is only the third player in history to surpass the 14,000-run mark in ODIs, joining Tendulkar and Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara, who reached the milestone in 378 innings back in 2015.
His journey from 13,000 to 14,000 runs took just 10 innings, having previously crossed the 13,000-run mark in September 2023, also against Pakistan, during the Asia Cup in Colombo.
Kohli had earlier become the fastest to 13,000 ODI runs, achieving the feat in just 277 innings, breaking Tendulkar’s previous record of 321 innings. During the 2023 ODI World Cup, he set another record by scoring 765 runs, the most in a single edition, surpassing Tendulkar’s tally.
He also became the first player to hit 50 ODI centuries, surpassing Tendulkar’s record during the World Cup semi-final.
With over 15,000 runs in List-A cricket, Kohli ranks 15th on the all-time list and third in ODIs, behind only Tendulkar (18,426 runs) and Sangakkara (14,234 runs). His 54 List-A centuries are second only to Tendulkar’s 60.
Kohli is now one match away from completing 300 ODIs, set to become only the seventh Indian to reach the landmark, following Tendulkar, MS Dhoni, Rahul Dravid, Mohammad Azharuddin, Sourav Ganguly, and Yuvraj Singh.
