United Nations, March 11, 2025: Pakistan has alerted the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) that the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) is evolving into a coordinating hub for militant groups across the region, with Afghanistan’s Taliban regime complicit in its cross-border attacks.
Addressing a UNSC session on Afghanistan, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Munir Akram, accused the Kabul administration of providing safe havens to militants who have escalated attacks on Pakistani soil.
“We have clear evidence that the Kabul authorities not only tolerate but actively facilitate the TTP’s cross-border terrorist attacks,” Akram told the Council.
Ambassador Akram stated that the TTP, with an estimated 6,000 fighters, has emerged as the largest terrorist outfit operating from Afghan territory. He accused the group of enjoying operational freedom and logistical support from elements within Afghanistan’s government.
He further warned that the TTP is forming alliances with other militant organizations, including Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) and Majeed Brigade.
Both groups have been involved in terrorist attacks targeting Pakistani security forces and Chinese investments in the country.
“Afghanistan has become a safe haven for over 20 terrorist groups, including Al-Qaeda, the TTP, and Baloch separatist militants. The Taliban’s inaction is enabling them to thrive,” Akram cautioned.
The Pakistani envoy criticized the UN Secretary-General’s latest report for failing to highlight the growing terrorist threat in Afghanistan.
“It is surprising that a report titled ‘The Situation in Afghanistan and its Implications for International Peace and Security’ discusses humanitarian and economic issues but neglects the rising wave of terrorism,” he remarked.
To counter the growing militant threat, Pakistan is urging the UN and international community to establish a counterterrorism working group under the Doha Process, create a formal UN mechanism to combat cross-border terrorism and hold Afghanistan accountable for sheltering terrorist groups
“Pakistan will not allow its security to be compromised. We will take all necessary steps to protect our people and our national interests,” Akram declared.
Pakistan’s warning at the UNSC underscores the rising instability in the region, as the TTP continues to consolidate its influence and expand its operations under Taliban-ruled Afghanistan.
