Karachi, March 21, 2025: The Government of Pakistan has amassed a record Rs34.5 billion in windfall tax from banks within just four months, following the Lahore High Court’s (LHC) decision to lift an earlier stay order.
Banks operating in Punjab played a key role in this record tax collection, contributing Rs11.5 billion collectively.
The seven major contributors include Muslim Commercial Bank (MCB): Rs3.48 billion, Allied Bank: Rs2.95 billion, Bank Al-Habib: Rs2.95 billion, Soneri Bank: Rs1.2 billion, Bank of Punjab: Rs870 million, MCB Islamic Bank Limited: Rs140 million and Punjab Provincial Cooperative Bank Limited: Rs52 million.
This landmark windfall tax collection underscores the government’s fiscal strategy and reflects the financial sector’s growing profitability, particularly amid economic reforms.
