Lahore, November 17, 2024 – Former Test cricketer Aqib Javed is reportedly set to take over as Pakistan’s white-ball coach, according to local media sources. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is said to be finalizing its decision to appoint a local coach on a permanent basis, with Javed expected to assume the role during the upcoming series against Zimbabwe starting November 24.
The move follows the resignation of Gary Kirsten as Pakistan’s white-ball head coach, a decision recently accepted by the PCB. In the interim, Jason Gillespie was appointed to lead the team for the white-ball format during Pakistan’s tour of Australia. The PCB announced Gillespie’s appointment via a post on its official X account (formerly Twitter).
Insiders suggest Kirsten’s resignation stemmed from tensions between him and the PCB, exacerbated by the board’s decision to strip both Kirsten and Gillespie of their selection powers. Sources claim that while Kirsten did not voice his concerns publicly, he was reportedly disheartened by the rising influence of the selection committee, particularly regarding team selections and captaincy decisions.
The coaching duo was initially brought on to rejuvenate Pakistan’s cricket performance. However, their limited involvement in decision-making appears to have created friction, ultimately leading to Kirsten’s departure.
Aqib Javed, a seasoned coach with significant experience in Pakistan cricket, is now seen as the front-runner to stabilize the white-ball team and guide them through upcoming challenges. Official confirmation of his appointment is expected soon.
