Lahore, January 8, 2025: Pakistan’s top-order batsman Fakhar Zaman has embarked on a rigorous training regime to secure his place in the 2025 Champions Trophy, with hopes of making a remarkable comeback on home soil.
In a candid conversation on the Viper Voices podcast, Zaman exuded confidence about his readiness for the prestigious tournament. “My entire focus is now on the Champions Trophy. I want to ensure I’m in the best possible shape,” he said. This commitment has led him to opt out of the current series against Australia and South Africa.
Zaman revealed that after missing the T20 World Cup due to illness and fitness concerns, he has now fully recovered and is eager to don the national colors again. He described his discussions with the selectors and head coach as encouraging, adding that the team management is keen to have him back in action.
“You will see me in Pakistan’s upcoming white-ball series,” Zaman confidently assured fans.
The 2023 World Cup marked his last appearance in international cricket, with his most recent match being in June 2024. Notably, Zaman is remembered for his stellar performance in the 2017 Champions Trophy final, where his knock of 114 runs against India played a pivotal role in Pakistan’s victory.
Zaman also took the opportunity to praise 22-year-old opener Saim Ayub for his impressive start to his One-Day International career. Ayub has already scored three centuries and a half-century in just nine innings, including two centuries against Australia and South Africa.
Expressing optimism about Ayub’s future, Zaman said, “He has the potential to become one of the top three players in the world if he continues playing for the next four to five years.” He also wished Ayub a speedy recovery, hoping to see him back on the field soon.
Zaman highlighted Pakistan’s depth in batting, emphasizing the strength of having three world-class players in Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan, and Saim Ayub. He described his own potential return as an added boost to the team’s firepower.
With the Champions Trophy 2025 being hosted in Pakistan, Zaman’s return could provide a significant lift to the team’s campaign.
