Rawalpindi, February 12, 2025: Former Prime Minister Imran Khan has decided to send a third open letter to Army Chief General Asim Munir, with its contents expected to be revealed later today.
His lawyer, Faisal Chaudhry, confirmed that the letter would address critical political and economic concerns. Speaking outside Adiala Jail, he stated that the letter would focus on structural reforms, allegations of election fraud, and government policies affecting democracy.
Chaudhry reiterated PTI’s demand for a judicial commission to investigate the May 9 events, accusing the government of failing to ensure transparency. He also criticized continued police operations in Punjab, particularly in Wazirabad, where he alleged PTI members were prevented from offering funeral prayers for a deceased worker.
PTI has also raised concerns over the restrictions on legal representatives and journalists covering cases related to the party, particularly those being heard at GHQ. Chaudhry announced that PTI would file a petition demanding open trials, arguing that the legal system had suffered significantly, especially after the 26th Constitutional Amendment, which he claimed had further weakened judicial independence.
The letter is expected to highlight governance failures, particularly in the economic sector. Khan has previously accused the government of appointing individuals linked to money laundering in key positions, while also attributing a rise in terrorism to the absence of the rule of law.
He also pointed to economic instability, citing figures that suggest 1.8 million Pakistanis have left the country in search of better opportunities. He claimed that under his leadership, Pakistan’s GDP growth rate stood at 6.4%, but poor governance had led to capital flight, with $20 billion leaving the country.
Chaudhry also referenced Pakistan’s 140th ranking on the World Justice Project Index, claiming it reflected a declining legal framework. He accused the government of using judicial and administrative tactics to suppress PTI, calling the ongoing crackdown a form of “political engineering.”
This letter follows allegations of election rigging in the 2024 general elections, where PTI claims the military establishment favored the Pakistan Muslim League (N). These accusations have led to widespread protests and unrest across the country.
The contents of the letter are expected to provide further insight into PTI’s stance on these key issues and could shape Pakistan’s political landscape in the coming weeks.
