Eidul Fitr 2025 likely on March 31, says Suparco

Karachi, March 26, 2025: Pakistan is expected to celebrate Eidul Fitr on March 31, 2025, based on scientific forecasts provided by the Space & Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco).

Suparco’s statement explains that the new moon for Shawwal 1446 Hijri will be born on March 29 at 3:58 PM (PST). However, it is unlikely to be visible that evening due to its young age and low positioning.

By March 30 (29th Ramadan in Pakistan), the moon will be around 27 hours old, making it easily visible after sunset. The 14-degree altitude and 2% illumination further support the likelihood of sighting the crescent across most parts of Pakistan.

The statement also indicates that Saudi Arabia is unlikely to sight the moon on March 29 due to the younger age of the crescent and its lower altitude. This suggests that the moon will likely be visible on March 30 in Saudi Arabia as well, meaning that Pakistan and much of the Middle East could observe Eid on the same day—March 31.

Despite Suparco’s scientific predictions, the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee will have the final say on the official Eid date. The committee will convene on March 30 to assess moon sighting reports from across the country.

A Suparco spokesperson stated:
“While scientific models strongly indicate a clear sighting on March 30, the final decision remains dependent on ground observations and the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee’s official verdict.”

Pakistan follows both scientific and traditional moon sighting methods, with Suparco’s calculations often aiding the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee’s decision-making.

If the crescent is sighted as expected, Ramadan will conclude with 29 fasts, and Eid ul-Fitr will be celebrated on Monday, March 31, 2025.
