India blocks Pakistan government's X account amid escalating tensions

New Delhi, April 24, 2025: In a move further straining already heightened tensions, India has blocked access to the official X (formerly Twitter) account of the Government of Pakistan across its territory. The step, reportedly taken in the aftermath of the recent Pahalgam incident in Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, has drawn criticism from Islamabad.

According to Indian media reports, the Ministry of Information Technology directed the action, prompting the social media platform X to restrict the Pakistani government’s account from being viewed within India. No formal investigation preceded the move, which appears to be part of a broader set of punitive measures.

The development comes as India has blamed Pakistan for the Pahalgam shooting, in which 28 tourists were killed — an allegation Pakistan has strongly rejected. In response to the attack, the Indian government has taken a series of unilateral steps, including the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, revocation of visas issued to Pakistani citizens, closure of the Wagah-Attari border, and a 48-hour deadline for all Pakistani nationals to exit Indian territory.

In reaction to India’s sweeping measures, Islamabad has convened an emergency meeting of the National Security Committee (NSC), chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The meeting, bringing together senior civil and military leadership, aims to chart Pakistan’s response to what officials are calling a “dangerous escalation.”

The Pahalgam incident, which occurred two days ago, has significantly exacerbated tensions between the nuclear-armed neighbors. Pakistani officials continue to deny any involvement in the attack, condemning India’s allegations as “baseless” and its retaliatory actions as “provocative and irresponsible.”
