New York, September 18,2024-Pakistan has made a significant leap in the United Nations (UN) E-Government Development Index (EGDI) 2024, rising to 136th place from 150th in the 2022 survey.

This impressive advancement marks Pakistan’s first-ever shift from the “Middle EGDI category” to the “High EGDI category,” showcasing substantial progress in its digital governance capabilities.

Pakistan’s EGDI score has increased to 0.5095, up from 0.4238 in 2022. Although the country still lags behind global leaders such as Denmark (0.9847) and regional leaders like Singapore (0.969) and the Maldives (0.6745), this improvement is a noteworthy milestone.

Minister of State for Information Technology, Shaza Fatima Khawaja, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to creating a “Digital Pakistan.” Speaking at an event in Islamabad on Wednesday, she stressed the importance of collaboration to drive innovation, particularly among the youth.

She also highlighted the essential role of the private sector in realizing the vision of a digital Pakistan, noting that the government is actively working to provide reliable and fast digital connectivity.

Shaza Fatima underscored Pakistan’s progress in the UN’s E-Government Development Index, which saw a 14-point improvement. She proudly mentioned that Pakistan is one of only two countries in Asia to have moved from the middle to the high tier in digital e-governance, calling it a major achievement. Additionally, she noted that Pakistan has made significant strides in cybersecurity, attaining top-tier status in this critical area.
