Lahore, July 3, 2025: Punjab Assembly Speaker Malik Ahmad Khan on Thursday filed a disqualification reference with the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) against 26 members of the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC).

Malik Ahmad Khan personally submitted the reference at the ECP office, seeking action against the lawmakers for alleged misconduct and violation of assembly rules.

The move targets the same 26 opposition members who were suspended from the Punjab Assembly following unprecedented chaos and vandalism during the budget session on June 27. The protest by SIC members involved sloganeering, property damage, and disruption of parliamentary proceedings.

In response, the speaker suspended the members’ assembly membership and announced on June 28 his intent to initiate formal disqualification proceedings.

“This reference is based on clear violations of parliamentary norms and breach of conduct during the session,” an official source stated.

The ECP will now review the reference and determine whether the SIC lawmakers will be formally disqualified from the provincial legislature.
