Islamabad, July 26, 2025: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday approved the establishment of a modern, globally compliant digital ecosystem within the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), aimed at transforming the country’s taxation infrastructure.

Chairing a high-level meeting to review the progress of FBR reforms, the prime minister also directed the immediate hiring of internationally recognized experts to support the implementation of the new system.

The meeting was attended by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, Federal Minister Ahsan Iqbal, Minister of State Bilal Azhar Kayani, FBR Chairman, Chief Reforms Coordinator Musharraf Zaidi, leading economic experts, and senior government officials, the Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement.

During the briefing, officials shared updates on the development of a comprehensive digital ecosystem aimed at centralizing FBR’s data systems and enabling real-time monitoring across the entire economic value chain.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif emphasized that mere digitization was not enough. Instead, a fully integrated and sustainable digital framework must be developed—capable of tracking economic activity from raw material production and imports to manufacturing and end-consumer purchases.

“The system should be robust enough to digitally monitor the complete value chain in real time,” the prime minister stated, adding that the centralized data generated must also be used to inform strategic economic decisions at the national level.

Highlighting the need to broaden the tax base, the prime minister stressed that reducing the tax burden on the common man is only possible by bringing more sectors into the tax net and curbing the informal economy.

He credited recent FBR reforms for helping steer the economy in a positive direction and reaffirmed the government’s resolve to build a transparent, tech-enabled tax system aligned with international best practices.
