India Champions stars refuse to play WCL 2025 semi-final against Pakistan Champions: Reports

Birmingham, July 30, 2025: The highly anticipated World Championship of Legends (WCL) 2025 semi-final clash between India Champions and Pakistan Champions has been thrown into uncertainty, as a majority of India Champions players have reportedly refused to participate in the match, citing political tensions and public sentiment, according to Indian media reports on Wednesday.

The defending champions, India Champions, who had earlier boycotted their league match against Pakistan Champions, managed a surprise entry into the semi-finals after a dominant victory over West Indies Champions. Their convincing win pushed them past England Champions in the standings on the basis of superior net run rate, securing fourth place.

As per the tournament format, India Champions are now scheduled to face table-toppers Pakistan Champions, who finished with nine points from five matches, in the first semi-final. However, the matchup has been clouded by controversy and doubt.

According to the latest reports from Indian news agencies, at least five prominent players—Yuvraj Singh (captain), Shikhar Dhawan, Harbhajan Singh, Irfan Pathan, and Yusuf Pathan—have expressed unwillingness to play the semi-final again Champions.

The players’ stance reportedly stems from heightened political sensitivities and the ongoing public discourse surrounding India-Pakistan relations.

The controversy had already been brewing earlier in the tournament when Shikhar Dhawan made headlines for openly opposing participation in a potential knockout clash with Pakistan. Following India Champions’ narrow loss to Australia, Dhawan was asked by a reporter whether he would play if his side were to meet Pakistan in the semi-final.

Visibly irritated by the question, Dhawan responded firmly:

“You’re asking this question at the wrong time and place — you shouldn’t have asked it. And even if I didn’t play earlier, I still won’t play now.”

The potential boycott by key Indian players raises significant concerns over the integrity and continuity of the WCL tournament. It also casts doubt on whether the much-awaited India-Pakistan semi-final — a crowd-puller by all standards — will go ahead as planned.

As of now, there has been no official response from WCL organisers or the Indian team management regarding a possible forfeit, replacement players, or rescheduling.

The situation remains fluid, with fans, officials, and broadcasters eagerly awaiting clarification on what could have been the marquee match of the tournament.
