Islamabad, August 10, 2025: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader and former National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser has announced the launch of a nationwide lawyers’ movement to resist the proposed 27th Constitutional Amendment, calling it a “grave threat to democratic norms.”

Speaking at a joint press conference alongside Tehreek Tahafuz Ayeen-e-Pakistan (TTAP) chief Mahmood Khan Achakzai and former Sindh governor Muhammad Zubair Umar, Qaiser alleged that the country’s governance system is “neither legal, constitutional, nor democratic” and remains under “administrative pressure.”

Qaiser also took aim at former army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa, holding him responsible for what he described as the current political and institutional breakdown. He accused Bajwa of “undermining democracy and the Constitution” during his tenure, claiming the consequences were still being felt.

The former speaker criticised the government for barring parliamentarians from inspecting prison facilities, particularly Adiala Jail, where PTI founder Imran Khan and other political leaders are incarcerated.
“Members of parliament have the privilege to visit prisons around the world — why is it being denied here?” Qaiser asked, alleging lawmakers are humiliated outside the jail gates in violation of parliamentary rules.

Achakzai issued a stern warning that any attempt to tamper with the Constitution would “shake the very foundations of Pakistan,” stressing that constitutional supremacy was the bedrock of national unity.

Zubair Umar, meanwhile, dismissed past claims that Pakistan was on the verge of default, calling them “false and politically motivated.” He said that the ruling coalition had completed three and a half years but failed to deliver on promises, including the pledge to “sacrifice politics to save the state.”

The opposition alliance pledged to mobilise nationwide resistance against what they described as “systemic injustice and constitutional violations,” with a month-long schedule of political activities already in place.
