Lahore, August 15, 2025: The Government of Pakistan has announced civil awards for nine prominent sportspersons in recognition of their outstanding contributions, marking the nation’s 78th Independence Day celebrations.

Former Pakistan cricket captain Shahid Afridi, one of the country’s most celebrated all-rounders, will be honoured with the Hilal-e-Imtiaz. Afridi represented Pakistan in 524 international matches and was a key member of the 2009 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup-winning squad.

The Hilal-e-Imtiaz will also be awarded to renowned mountaineer Shehroze Kashif, the youngest Pakistani to summit all 14 peaks above 8,000 metres, and the late equestrian Malik Muhammad Atta.

Former Pakistan women’s cricket team captain and ICC Hall of Famer Sana Mir has been shortlisted for the Sitara-e-Imtiaz for her contributions to cricket. Mir, who represented Pakistan for nearly 15 years, made history in June by becoming the first Pakistani woman cricketer inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame.

Para-athlete Haider Ali, Pakistan’s most decorated Paralympian with four international medals — including a bronze in discus throw at the Paris 2024 Paralympics — has also been nominated for the Sitara-e-Imtiaz.

Mixed martial artist Shahzaib Rind and kabaddi player Muhammad Sajjad will receive the President’s Award for Pride of Performance for their achievements in their respective sports.

Squash player Hamza Khan, shooter Mohsin Nawaz, and tennis veteran Rashid Malik have been nominated for the Tamgha-e-Imtiaz.

The awards will be formally presented during the Pakistan Day ceremony on March 23, 2026.
