Islamabad, August 19, 2025: Former Chairman Senate Mian Raza Rabbani on Tuesday said that there could be no compromise on the sovereignty of Parliament, which derives its authority from the Constitution of 1973.

Responding to a statement made by the Attorney General on the floor of the Senate, Rabbani termed the remarks “flawed in law and not supported by the Constitution.”

He asserted that the internal proceedings of Parliament, its committees, and its Secretariat could not be questioned in any court, as the Constitution did not permit such intervention. He also recalled that a number of rulings by Senate chairmen in the past had upheld this position.

Rabbani stressed that the courts could only intervene in cases of constitutional violations. Any interference in parliamentary affairs, he said, amounted to a violation of the trichotomy of powers as envisaged by the Constitution of 1973.

“There is no room for finding a middle path on this issue. Such interference must stop. No windows can be left open for intrusion by other institutions. Each institution must learn to function within the ambit provided by the Constitution,” he remarked.
