KP CM Gandapur says passport blocked since May 9, court issues arrest warrant in liquor, weapons case

Peshawar, September 10, 2025: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur disclosed on Wednesday that his passport has been blocked since May 9, preventing him from traveling abroad.

Speaking to reporters at the KP Assembly, Gandapur said he had applied for a new passport but authorities refused to issue one. “I applied, but they are not giving it to me,” he remarked. He also alleged that he has been repeatedly denied permission to meet the PTI founder.

“If Khan Sahib orders, I don’t even need a visa to go to Afghanistan,” he added.

Meanwhile, in Islamabad, a district and sessions court issued an arrest warrant for Gandapur in the alleged liquor and illegal weapons recovery case. Judicial Magistrate Mubashir Hassan issued the order after no representative appeared for the CM during Wednesday’s hearing. Authorities have been directed to arrest Gandapur and produce him before the court on September 17.

The development follows a Lahore anti-terrorism court verdict on Tuesday in the May 9 riots case linked to violence at Rahat Bakery Chowk. ATC Judge Manzar Ali Gul acquitted PTI leader Shah Mahmood Qureshi, but sentenced Yasmin Rashid, Ejaz Chaudhry, Mian Mehmood-ur-Rasheed, and Umar Sarfraz Cheema to 10 years in prison each. PTI leader Khadija Shah was awarded a five-year sentence, while Rubina Jameel and Afshan Tariq were acquitted.

Last month, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) de-notified several PTI lawmakers — including opposition leaders in the Senate and National Assembly, Shibli Faraz and Omar Ayub Khan — after their convictions in May 9 cases.
