Riyadh, September 23, 2025: Saudi Arabia’s Grand Mufti, Sheikh Abdulaziz Al-Sheikh, has passed away, Saudi media reported on Tuesday.
The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman extended their condolences to the late cleric’s family, the Saudi people, and the wider Islamic world.
Funeral prayers for Sheikh Abdulaziz will be offered after Asr prayer at the Imam Turki bin Abdullah Mosque in Riyadh, according to local reports. The Royal Court described him as a “distinguished scholar who made significant contributions to the service of Islam and Muslims.”
Appointed as Grand Mufti in 1999 by King Fahd, Sheikh Abdulaziz succeeded Sheikh Abdul Aziz Ibn Baz. In addition to his role as the Kingdom’s top religious authority, he served as president of the Council of Senior Scholars and regularly delivered sermons during the annual Hajj pilgrimage.
King Salman has also directed that funeral prayers in absentia be held at the Grand Mosque in Makkah, the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah, and all mosques across the Kingdom.
