Lahore, October 9, 2025: Pakistan’s interim red-ball head coach Azhar Mahmood has strongly defended the selection of 38-year-old left-arm spinner Asif Afridi in the squad for the upcoming Test series against South Africa, dismissing criticism over the player’s age and emphasizing his consistent domestic performances.

Pakistan had initially named an 18-member squad for the two-match series, which included three uncapped players — Rohail Nazir, Faisal Akram, and Asif Afridi. The squad was later trimmed to 16 players, with Aamir Jamal and Faisal Akram released.

Asif’s selection sparked debate among cricket circles, with critics questioning the inclusion of an older player. However, Azhar Mahmood backed the decision, citing Afridi’s impressive record in domestic cricket.

“Asif is part of our squad, and he’s not there just to bowl in the nets. I don’t understand the objections,” Azhar said while addressing reporters in Lahore. “If you look at his performance, he took 53 wickets last year and 27 this year — that’s 80 wickets in two seasons. If someone’s issue is his age, then age is just a number.”

Afridi recently topped the bowling charts in the Hanif Mohammad Trophy, taking 33 wickets in just five matches at an average of 12.55, including five three-wicket hauls.

The head coach also pointed out that age is not a limiting factor in international cricket, referring to South Africa’s 36-year-old Simon Harmer, who remains a key wicket-taking option for his team.

“South Africa has Simon Harmer, who is 37 or 38 years old. What matters is who can take 20 wickets for you. We needed experience, and with concussion protocols in place, having reliable depth is essential,” Azhar added.

He concluded by praising Afridi’s skills and temperament: “Asif is a wonderful bowler and has a bright future ahead.”

The first Test between Pakistan and South Africa is scheduled to begin on October 12 at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore.
