Morocco shock Argentina to win historic U20 World Cup title

Santiago, October 20, 2025: Morocco made history on Sunday by defeating Argentina 2-0 in the final of the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup at the Estadio Nacional Julio Martínez Prádanos, clinching the title for the first time in their history.

The victory also marks a historic milestone as Morocco became the first Arab nation to lift the U20 World Cup trophy.

Midfielder Yassir Zabiri, who plays for FC Famalicão in Portugal’s top flight, emerged as the hero, scoring both goals in the first half.

Argentina’s hopes suffered an early blow when their goalkeeper was sent off for a last-man foul inside the opening minutes. Morocco capitalised immediately, with Zabiri curling home a stunning 12th-minute free-kick to open the scoring. He doubled the lead just before halftime with a calm finish, sealing Morocco’s place in football history.

The North Africans completed a flawless campaign, having overcome South Korea, the United States, and France in the knockout stages before dethroning the six-time champions in the final.

For Argentina, who were seeking a record-extending seventh U20 title, the night ended in disappointment — their first defeat of the tournament. The South Americans struggled in the absence of rising stars Franco Mastantuono (Real Madrid) and Claudio Echeverri (Bayer Leverkusen), both unavailable for the final.

Morocco’s triumph underscores the nation’s rapid rise in global football, following recent breakthroughs at both senior and youth levels.

Argentina will now shift focus to their senior side, which prepares to defend its FIFA World Cup title in North America next summer.
